Gait Analysis

Gait analysis is the study of the dog’s movement. Early signs of lameness may be as subtle as a shortened stride or shorter stance time on the injured leg. Both subjective and objective assessment is important to not only establish the source of complaint but also monitor progression of treatment. We use a specialised sports app to allow us to watch movement patterns to 1/8 of a sec. We analyse static (standing), walk and trot.  To enable us to study your dog’s gait we require photos and videos of your dog.  You will need assistance to re-produce what we require below.

Please use a standard lead or locked extender and follow the simple steps below.

STEP ONE

We need some pictures of your pet in the below positions, we suggest taking them somewhere they feel relaxed with a few treats. This will allow you to get the pictures more easily. Please get a picture of your pet in all the below positions.

Do not force your dog to complete any of the below, if uncomfortable and showing any signs of stress or anxiety, stop.

STEP TWO

Video how your dog would naturally walk, please ensure you can clearly see your dog walking replicating the video of Izzy the Dalmatian with her mummy. You will need help, a friend or family member sitting on or low to the ground so we are looking at the dog at their level.

The gait video shows how your dog generally moves. Gait is defined as their walking pattern.

Do not force your dog to complete any of the above, if uncomfortable and showing any signs of stress or anxiety, stop.
