We often talk about *remedial exercise* — but what does that actually mean?

Remedial exercise refers to targeted, therapeutic movements designed to correct a specific problem, such as pain, weakness, reduced mobility, or an abnormal gait.

It is not general fitness, and it’s not the same as a walk, run, or play session.

These exercises are prescribed with purpose, following a veterinary or veterinary physiotherapy assessment, to help restore normal movement and function.

Remedial exercise may be used to:

🐾 improve joint mobility

🐾 strengthen weak or underused muscles

🐾 correct posture or gait abnormalities

🐾 reduce pain and help prevent re-injury

🐾 support recovery after surgery or injury

🐾 improve balance, coordination, and body awareness (proprioception)

Examples can include:

✔️ controlled range-of-motion exercises

✔️ core stability work

✔️ resistance-based strengthening

✔️ balance or proprioceptive exercises

✔️ targeted stretching to restore normal muscle length

✔️ task-specific retraining (such as sit-to-stand or controlled stepping)

At Vet Rehab NI, **remedial exercises are only prescribed by a vet or veterinary physiotherapist**, following a full assessment, and are tailored specifically to each dog.

⚠️ It’s very important **not to attempt any remedial exercises without veterinary guidance** — the wrong exercise, done at the wrong time or in the wrong way, can cause pain or delay recovery.

If you’re unsure whether exercises are appropriate for your dog, please speak to your vet or get in touch with us — we’re always happy to advise 😊
