Elbow Dysplasia in Dogs

Supporting Canine Comfort and Mobility at Vet Rehab NI

Elbow dysplasia is one of the most common orthopaedic conditions affecting large and giant breed dogs, and a leading cause of front limb lameness and early-onset arthritis. At Vet Rehab NI, we specialise in supporting dogs with elbow dysplasia through targeted rehabilitation, pain management, and mobility care.

What Is Elbow Dysplasia?

Elbow dysplasia is a developmental condition involving abnormal growth of the elbow joint, leading to poor joint alignment, cartilage damage, and painful movement. It often results from one or more of the following issues:

Fragmented Coronoid Process (FCP) – a small piece of bone breaks off inside the elbow joint.
Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) – cartilage fails to form properly, leading to joint inflammation.
Ununited Anconeal Process (UAP) – a part of the elbow bone doesn’t fuse correctly.
Joint Incongruity – the bones forming the elbow don’t fit together as they should.

These issues lead to wear and tear in the joint, often causing arthritis even in young dogs.

⚠ Signs of Elbow Dysplasia

Symptoms may begin as early as 4–12 months of age, though some dogs show signs later in life. Watch for:

Intermittent or persistent front limb lameness
Stiffness after rest or getting up
Reluctance to play, run, or jump
Swollen, thickened, or warm elbows
Altered posture or outward-turned front paws

If left untreated, elbow dysplasia can severely affect your dog’s quality of life and long-term mobility.

🩺 How Is It Treated?

Treatment depends on your dog’s age, weight, severity of symptoms, and overall health. Options may include:

Surgical intervention to remove bone fragments or realign the joint
Pain management using anti-inflammatories and joint supplements
Controlled exercise and weight management
Rehabilitation therapy to restore function and reduce pain
